Bangladesh: Boat full of passengers crash, 24 dead, dozens missing

Dhaka: A boat full of Hindu priests capsized in Bangladesh, killing 24 people while dozens are still missing.

According to foreign media, the district administrator of North Panchgarh, Jahoor Islam, while highlighting the incident, said that the bodies recovered so far include 12 women and eight children, while the rescue operation is ongoing for the missing persons. The boat was transporting Hindu devotees to a temple.

Jahoor-ul-Islam said that he did not know the exact number of missing people, but according to reports, there were more than 70 people in the boat.

On the other hand, the police say that around 30 people are still missing while some passengers managed to swim to the shore.

It should be noted that in Bangladesh, which has inland waterways and poor safety standards, hundreds of people die every year in boat accidents.

In April last year, at least 26 people were killed when a boat collided with a cargo ship and capsized in the Shitalakhshaya River outside the capital Dhaka.
