CAMBODIA: 10 students have died and 1 is missing after a motorized boat capsized in the Mekong River in the southern province of Kundal.
Kundal Province Police Chief Chhoon Suchet said on Friday that the accident happened at around 7pm local time yesterday evening in Luuk Diek district, the boat carrying two crew members and 13 students about 50 meters from the shore. Drowned in water.
He said that 10 dead bodies have been recovered till Friday afternoon while 4 survivors including 2 students and 2 staff members have been rescued. The search for a missing person is still going on.
Suchet said the accident happened when the boat was taking English class students to their homes in a village on the island. Speeding, overloading and careless driving have been cited as the reasons for the accident. According to the Kundal Provincial Police report, the unfortunate students were aged between 12 and 14 years.
