STOCKHOLM: Drinking four or more cups of tea a day can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, a study has suggested.

The study, which was presented at the annual event on diabetes studies in Stockholm, found that drinking coffee, green tea or oolong tea daily over a period of more than 10 years increased the chances of diabetes. 17 percent were reduced.

According to research, drinking one to three cups of tea per day reduces the risk of diabetes by 4%.

The study’s lead author Shiying Li, from the Wuhan University of Science and Technology, said the researchers’ findings are interesting because the results suggest that people can reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by drinking as much as four cups of tea a day. Previous research has found that tea may be beneficial to our health in part because it contains antioxidants and polyphenols that may protect against disease.

However, to reduce the risks of type 2 diabetes, experts agree that people should watch their weight, since obesity accounts for 80 to 85 percent of the disease.

The research, based on a review of 19 studies of more than 1 million people, has not yet been published in a journal.
