ATHENS: Greek police rescued a group of 92 illegal immigrants who were naked and some of them injured near the northern border with Turkey.
According to the report, Greek police said in a statement that all the refugees were men who were found on Friday near the Evros River, which marks the border between Greece and Turkey.
Investigations by Greek police and officials from the EU’s border agency Frontex found evidence that migrants had crossed the river from Turkey in rubber boats and entered Greek territory, the statement said.
“Border police officers discovered 92 illegal immigrants without clothes, some of whom had injuries on their bodies,” the statement said.
It was not clear how or why all the men lost their clothes. Greek Migration Minister Notis Mitarachi said in a tweet that Turkey’s treatment of migrants was “shameful to civilization”.
Athens expects Ankara to investigate the incident, Turkish officials were not immediately available for comment, he said.
