New Delhi: 9 months after the death of General Bipin Rawat in a plane crash, the Modi government has chosen his successor.
According to Indian media, 61-year-old retired army officer Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan has been appointed as the new Chief of Defense Staff of the country. It is the largest military post in the country that was invented by the Modi government.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi appointed General Bipin Rawat to the post of Chief of Defense Staff on January 1, 2020 after his retirement as Army Chief.
Opposition and critics raised objections to the creation of this post. The opposition leaders said that Prime Minister Modi has created this post to honor his friend Bipin Rawat even after retirement.
In December 2021, two years after assuming office, General Bipin Rawat was killed along with his colleagues in a plane crash, and the post has been vacant since then.
The statement released by the Ministry of Defense said that the new Chief of Defense Staff, retired Lt. Gen. Anil Chauhan, has taken over the command of sensitive corps like Jammu and Kashmir and North East India during his 40-year career in the army.
