Iraq: Former government officials have embezzled two and a half billion dollars, arrest warrants issued

An Iraqi court ordered the arrest of 4 former government officials for embezzling 2.5 billion dollars from the national treasury.

An investigative judge in Baghdad has issued arrest warrants for 4 officials of the former government.

Among these officials are relatives of former finance minister and former prime minister Mustafa al-Khadumi who are now living abroad.

In the period from September 2021 to August 2022, 5 companies cashed 247 checks worth two and a half billion dollars, this amount was cashed.

This money was cashed from the companies’ accounts by their owners and escaped.

All four ex-officers are accused of embezzling money from tax authorities.

This case is being described as the biggest heist of the century in the country.
