Lagos: At least 24 people have died and more than 18,000 have been displaced due to floods in the rainy season that started in May in the northern state of Katsina, Nigeria.
During a press briefing in Katsina, the state capital, Umar Muhammad, the head of the state’s emergency management agency, said that 34 local government areas of Katsina have been affected by the flood and about 16,625 houses have been destroyed.
He said that 1,620 acres (6.6 square kilometers) of land has also been submerged due to floods and the state government will soon provide relief to the affected residents.
In May, Nigerian authorities issued an alert to 32 of the country’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, warning of severe flooding this year.
