Russia expels Japanese diplomat on espionage charges

Moscow: A Japanese diplomat based in Russia’s eastern city of Vladivostok has been deported after being detained on espionage charges.

A statement issued by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) said that a diplomat at the Consulate General of Japan in Vladivostok was briefed on current aspects of Russia’s cooperation with one of the Asia-Pacific countries, and was arrested red-handed in Russia’s Primorsky region after receiving a monetary reward for information on the economic situation of the effects of Western sanctions.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that the Minister of Consular Affairs of the Japanese Embassy in Moscow was summoned to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday and told that the said consul must leave Russia within 48 hours because his activities as a consular officer, incompatible with and harmful to Russia’s security interests. The Russian Foreign Ministry has strongly protested to Japan over this incident.
