WASHINGTON: A Russian-controlled nuclear power plant in Ukraine was rocked by shelling, which the United Nations nuclear watchdog has condemned, saying that such attacks pose a threat of a major nuclear disaster.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that more than a dozen explosions rocked Europe’s largest nuclear power plant between the evening and Sunday night, Al Jazeera reported. Both Moscow and Kyiv have accused each other of shelling the facility.
“The news from our team yesterday and this morning is very troubling,” said IAEA chief Raffaele Grossi, “the explosions at the site of this major nuclear power plant are completely unacceptable, whoever is behind it.” This should stop immediately as I have said many times before you are playing with fire.
Citing information provided by the plant management, the IAEA team said that some buildings, systems and equipment at the site have been damaged, but none of them are critical to nuclear safety and security so far.
