Sri Lanka, which is suffering from the worst economic crisis, has announced the local elections across the country.
According to foreign media reports, the Sri Lankan Election Commission has decided to hold the elections. Sri Lankan officials say that the local elections will be held before February.
The Sri Lankan Election Commission has said in a brief statement that more than 8,000 seats in the council will fall vacant between January 18 and 21, after which mandatory elections will have to be held within 28 days.
Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, while stopping the elections, said that the bankrupt country cannot spend 10 billion Sri Lankan rupees on elections.
