Washington: The US has threatened to impose sanctions on Turkey if it has trade relations with Russia.
According to foreign media, a letter has been sent by the US Treasury Department to major business figures and organizations in Turkey, threatening to impose restrictions on trade with Russia. Turkish businessmen have confirmed receiving the letter.
Earlier this month, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin agreed to increase bilateral economic cooperation during a meeting.
According to Turkish official data, trade between Russia and Turkey increased by 50 percent in May and July compared to last year.
The US Deputy Treasury Secretary visited Turkey in June and warned officials against imposing restrictions on trade ties with Russia.
