Uganda: 9 killed in New Year fireworks stampede

Kampala: Nine people were killed in a stampede at a shopping mall in the Ugandan capital to watch a New Year fireworks display.

According to the foreign news agency ‘AFP’, the police said that nine people, including a 10-year-old boy, died when they got stuck in a narrow corridor coming to see the New Year’s fireworks display.

According to the police, many people got trapped as they were entering to watch the fireworks in large numbers, several people died of suffocation while doing so. People were celebrating the New Year at the shopping mall, which is located on a highway connecting Kampala to Entebbe International Airport.

A police spokesperson said that emergency personnel rushed to the scene and shifted the injured to the hospital, where nine people were confirmed dead.
